There are a number of causes of stinky smelling dog’s ears. One cause is that the dog’s skin has become damp and the discharge has not been able to drain out. The dog’s ear wax is still sticky and has a foul odor. It also will produce a very itchy rash. This is also one of the reasons that your dog might not want to lay down next to you on the couch or sleep with you on the bed.

Stinky smell coming from your dog’s ears could be a number of things – Many times it could be something as simple as a hairball in the ear or a buildup of earwax. The dog’s ears are the front part of their body and the nostrils and hair are on the back. In order for us humans to smell things we must have the ability to air out the things that we are breathing. Without this ability all of our bodily systems will eventually be bogged down by accumulated waste material and bacteria. It is exactly the same for dogs.

Dogs will also react to an unpleasant smell in the same way that humans will – A dog that smells badly will act in a way that is similar to how humans would react. When we are sick and have a fever, it is normal for us to run to the doctor and get relief. We sniff out the bad bacteria in our bodies to alleviate the discomfort. It works the same for dogs. If your dog’s body is being overwhelmed by an itchy, sickly smell that it cannot shake then your dog is going to get very sick.

A dog’s sense of smell is so strong that it can distinguish between good and bad odors – This means that if you were cooking and you put garlic oil in your food your dog would smell it even if the dishwasher was full. Your dogs sense of smell is so strong that it can pinpoint the exact source of the bad smell. With dogs’ noses they are able to tell exactly where there is a bad smell that they can associate with whatever they are sick over. This explains why do dogs’ ears smell like a trashcan.

As mentioned before it is normal for dogs to have bad smells around their ears – This is especially true of dogs that have been recently spayed or neutered as their levels of testosterone are different. If you have recently had either of these procedures done to your dog then you should be prepared for your pet’s smell to be very strong.

If you have never had your dog spayed or neutered – then you should know that a male dog has a very sensitive female smell. This is why do dogs’ ears smell like a trashcan. Males produce much more testosterone and will take in much more bad smells than females.

Neutering or spaying will reduce the amount of bad smells that are being emitted from your dog but it will not completely remove them.
