How to train a Husky is one of the most popular questions I get asked by new Husky owners. It’s easy to see why. Huskies make great pets, but like any dog they can learn bad habits too. The Husky is still a powerful animal, so just because you want to own one doesn’t mean you can take forever to train it. I have had mine for over a decade, so I have had plenty of time to figure out the best way to train Huskies. Here are my top 11 tips as far as how to train a Husky.

First off, get your Husky groomed regularly: Dogs groom themselves and keep their coats looking neat and shiny. This will go far in preventing your husky from developing bad behaviors. Be sure to give him a good brush, and use a firm voice when brushing to discourage excessive biting.

Pulling on the leash is just as bad as pulling on your own coat: so be very patient with your Husky, but be sure not to pull him too hard. If he pulls harder, immediately stop and try to redirect his attention, in other words, ignore him for a few second and if he tries again ignore him. This will allow him to learn what he’s doing at the moment and he will eventually learn not to pull. As always, be on the lookout for signs that your husky might be about to pull since pulling on the leash can cause damage to your pet’s skin and coat.

Training a Husky starts with obedience training: and begins with being able to understand your dog’s basic needs. A good beginning step is to teach him to sit on command. You do this by sitting on the ground next to your dog while giving the command to sit. Now give your dog the treat and praise him for his obedience.

After learning to sit, it’s time to move on to learning to stay: To begin crate training your husky, make sure you have some good treats ready. Once your husky has entered the crate, close the door and put a favorite toy or food inside. The next step is to walk towards your husky with the treats in one hand and the clicker in the other. Click the clicker a few times and say the word clicker as you do so in an excited tone.

After your husky has entered the crate and started to stay down: slowly put the harness over his torso. As he starts to stand, begin to tighten the harness in small increments. If your husky pulls against it, make sure to reinforce him with the treat and positive reinforcement so he knows what it feels like to have the weight on him.

Keep repeating the steps from the first paragraph until your husky is comfortable in the harness and understands what the harness does. And that is how to train a husky.
