A pet, or domesticated animal, is generally an animal kept mainly for the enjoyment of a single person, family or acquaintance and not necessarily as a lab, livestock, wild animal or working animal. Though in some countries dogs and cats are treated as legal farm animals, other countries have made it illegal to own more than a single pet at a time. In these places dogs and cats are commonly used for hunting.
The word “pet” comes from: the Latin word meaning “a domestic animal.” It is used today in a generalized way to refer to any domesticated animal used for companionship, such as dogs, cats, birds, fish, rabbits and rodents, as well as insects. It is interesting to note that the word “pet” actually began as a synonym for “tame.” Thus, early writings in Ancient Greece indicate that members of the slave culture used the word “pet” to refer to the members of their harems.
Today, most people keep dogs as pets: Although dogs can be used as hunters and as companions, most people keep them strictly for companionship purposes. Some dogs, called lap dogs, are kept by family members as playthings. Other dogs, known as show dogs, are bred for the purposes of competition in dog shows. Some dogs have been domesticated for other reasons, such as being useful for herding.
PETs provide many health benefits: Studies are currently being conducted on the health benefits of PETs as a preventative treatment for cancer. One of the most exciting aspects of studying the health benefits of PETs is the possibility that PETs may one day be able to help cure certain forms of cancer. Though further studies are needed to confirm these findings, the potential for PETs to help treat certain forms of cancer is exciting.

Many people love to pet animals: but do not want to be forced to put their pets to death because they are unable to care for them. Because of advances in modern medicine, more animals are able to be saved when they are suffering from serious illnesses or handicaps. Veterinarians and animal rescue groups are making sure that these animals are well taken care of. They also work to provide pet animals with the best possible health care so that they will not suffer from debilitating diseases or injuries. If you are willing to save a life, then you should consider trying to save a pet’s life with a PET.
Many people who have worked with domesticated animals: feel that PETs should be adopted as loving and devoted companions to humans. While some aspects of the domestication process may still need to be addressed, PETs are less likely than dogs or cats to develop the same behavioral problems, such as aggression. In the past, there have been reports of PETs exhibiting signs of aggression toward humans. However, these reports have been unable to accurately pinpoint whether this aggression was caused by the familiarity or grooming regimen that PET owners were using on their pets. While it is impossible to completely eliminate any possible aspects of aggression, it is generally safe to assume.
That most PET owners have done everything possible to provide their pets with the best care possible.
